Resources: Information on Leucovorin & FRAT Testing for Patients with Autism and Their Families

We know many of you have been hearing questions from families of children and teens with autism about FRAT testing and prescriptions for leucovorin based on recent statements from the current administration.

To provide clarity, a multidisciplinary team at Children’s National — including experts from Neurodevelopment, Psychiatry, Neuropsychology, Neurology, Genetics, Lab Medicine, and Primary Care — came together to review the latest evidence. After a thorough review, the group concluded that there is no clinical indication for FRAT testing and that leucovorin is currently only recommended for treatment of formally diagnosed cerebral folate deficiency. FRAT testing is not offered at Children’s National.

We understand that these conversations with families can be challenging, especially given the recent attention in the media. To support you and your patients, we are providing resources that help explain these topics clearly and compassionately:

Thank you for continuing to provide thoughtful, evidence-based care to your patients and families.
